Walnut Grove Back-To-School Mall held each summer the week before school starts. WG distributes school supplies to children in our community in a shopping experience. In 2008 we served six (6) area school corporations and 200 children. But this mission is growing every year!
Thanks to generous public donations and our grant from Knox County Community Foundation, our 2009 Mall was a HUGE success! The North Knox area had their own mall at the Bicknell Elks Club and even without the 55+/- of those students from previous years we still were able to serve 224 children on Mall day and another 20+ the same week brought our total to over 270! With the present economy here is such need and we are so very blessed to be able to help in this small way.
Each child was given free of charge: all supplies needed for their grade level, a fun gift, as well as a light lunch for the students and their families.
The children register upon entry to the Mall, they are given a copy of the required supplies for their own school and teacher. Parents wait in our quiet sanctuary while their children "shop" with assistance from Walnut Grove family members.
At the Mall the child has the opportunity to choose a new book bag, paper, binders, pencils and pens, crayons, paints, tissue, everything the student needs from the list provided by their classroom teacher. After choosing the school supplies, the child may choose a "fun" item from the Mall's wide variety of items. Our "fun" room contains pillows, blankets, wallets, hair styling supplies, and a few small toys or jewelry
Future plans may include: hair-cuts, dental screening, and the Knox County Health Dept. will be on-site with information about necessary inoculations. If you are a beautician/barber and would like to find a way to use your talents for the Lord's work, please contact us...we need you!
Our Walnut Grove Back-To-School Mall is proud to be funded, in part, by the Knox County Community Foundation. Donations are always welcome and used year-round to buy supplies as they found at reduced prices. Your donation may be be mailed to: WG Mall, PO Box 215, Monroe City, IN 47557
